The Xbox has always been in a unique position, often feeling like the underdog in the gaming console race. Even during the era of the original Xbox, it was seen as a "third place" contender. The situation only got more complicated with the Xbox One, a console initially intended to be a multimedia hub, but which ultimately suffered from player backlash due to its focus on non-gaming features. However, with the advent of Microsoft's "Everything is an Xbox" vision, the specter of the One still lingers, influencing the future of the brand. With the upcoming Developer Direct on January 23, featuring games like South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and a surprise fourth title, there’s a chance Microsoft may prove us all wrong and reveal that their vision was far from misguided.
The shift in focus, though, marks a significant turning point for Xbox. While South of Midnight remains a true exclusive, Microsoft seems to be slowly realizing they don’t need to keep chasing the hardware race. The idea of "Everything is an Xbox" allows the company to step back from competing in the traditional console wars, without it being considered a failure. If Microsoft can convince players that their broad content strategy is viable, they open the door to numerous collaborations and new revenue streams.
Interestingly, the company is also pushing a new handheld device aimed at seamlessly combining the best of Xbox and Windows gaming. This could signal the beginning of the end for the traditional Xbox console, echoing the success of devices like the Nintendo Switch. Maybe, just maybe, the future of gaming lies in versatile handhelds that can easily dock to bigger screens when needed.
For me, this shift is something I’ve come to accept. As long as I can still enjoy gaming on a big screen with excellent visuals, I’m all for the industry evolving in this direction. Who needs bulky consoles when handheld devices like the Switch and Steam Deck already offer the convenience of gaming anywhere? Let’s make that the standard.
