The World Health Organization (WHO) has praised efforts to reduce the outbreak of Corona Virus in Asia’s largest slum, Dharavi. The WHO has said that this area is on the verge of being liberated from Corona today due to the efforts made to curb the corona virus under the Dharavi model. Citing the example of Dharavi, the WHO has said that aggressive action with national and global solidarity can prevent the epidemic.

Despite the ever increasing corona infects in Mumbai, there has been a ban on the spread of corona in Dharavi. Only 12 new cases were registered here on Friday. The manner in which the spread of the virus is being stopped in Dharavi, the WHO is affected. During a media briefing, WHO Director General Tredos Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, ‘There are many examples around the world that have shown that no matter how high the outbreak is, it can be controlled and some of these examples are in Italy, Spain and South Korea, and even Dharavi, a very densely populated area of the metropolis of Mumbai, is included. He further said that inclusion of community, testing, tracing, isolation and immediate treatment of all patients is important to break the chain of infection and suppress the virus, and this is done in Dharavi.

This success of the Dharavi model is also a matter of discussion because Maharashtra is the most corona affected state in the country. According to BMC, the number of corona virus cases in Mumbai has increased to 90,000 with 1,354 new patients on Friday. While 5,202 people have died due to the virus so far. At the same time, with the arrival of 12 new cases in Dharavi on Friday, the total number of infections has increased to 2,359. Let us tell you that Asia’s largest slum Dharavi is spread over 2.5 sq km, where about 8 lakh people live.

What is Dharavi model?
The first case of corona was reported on April 1 in Dharavi. It was feared that the situation may deteriorate rapidly, as around 8 people live here and 80 percent of them use public toilets. The biggest problem was that people could neither do home isolation nor could they follow social distancing. Keeping this in mind, the central government sent a team of experts here. Due to the absence of isolation of suspected patients in the dense population, institutional isolation was arranged and the school, college were made quarantine centers. In addition, the problem of mass toilets was overcome. Testing was accelerated, due to which the speed of spread of corona in Dharavi has stopped in a way.
